This semester I learned a lot about how to effectively implement a language arts lesson plan. In my pre-practicum I implemented the Friendly Letter Writing Unit that is posted in my blog which I felt went very well, but in my practicum I enjoyed being able to see the childrens writing and reading imporve over the course of my stay.
I learned a lot about how to implement a Guided Reading Lesson, because before I did not feel comfortable doing so. There is so much to cover when giving a lesson of that nature I was nervous to forget something. During my practicum I implemented a Guided Reading lesson almost every other week with the same group of kids and learned a lot about the process. One of the most important things I learned is how to manage a small group of children. A lot of times they wanted to talk a lot and to get off task, but I learned how imprtant it was to make them stay focused. Another things I learned was to have a task waiting for them when they finished reading. Many times children would read at different paces and then I had a set of questions for them to look over while they waited for our discussion.
Another lesson I enjoyed teaching and learned a lot from was creating a Leo Lionni style book. In this lesson students had to work together and create a story. We read lots of his books and then created a chart with the themes that are most common in those stories. This was the first lesson I did with the whole group and learned a lot about how to manage the classroom. It was really important for me to be organized and know what I was going to say before talking with the kids. I also needed to be very explicit in my instruction and allow time for questions in case someone didn't understand. Teaching Language Arts is one of my favorite subjects. I want to learn more strategies and activities to do with students so I may effectively teach in the future.
