Going into my practicum I think that Math was the subject I felt most comfortable teaching. The classes I took at Wheelock combined with my own knowledge gave me a great foundation for teaching this subject. The lessons I implemented the most were with the 1st grade students in the class. I learned how important it is to have many different strategies for completing problems to teach the students. Also, 1st graders come in to the classroom at various different levels. One child in the group was able to do math beyond a 2nd grade level while another had barely worked with the numbers above 8 in kindergarten.
I liked entering the classroom in September so I was able to see how the students progressed with their math skills. I enjoyed learning how to teach basic math concepts and my supervising practitioners did such an amazing job differentiating instruction for the students on all the different levels. I will take a lot away from their style of teaching math. I think the most important thing is to provide a lot of manipulatives for children because it helps them visualize what they are learning and keeps them focused.
